An exceptional late 19th century original work by listed French artist Emile Godchaux (1860-1938) executed in oils on canvas depicting a pair of cows on a forest path. This pastoral scene is signed 'Godchaux' in the lower right corner and presented in a handsome period carved giltwood and plaster frame in the late neoclassical taste with wire to the verso for hanging. Great details and wonderful light reflection.
Emile Godchaux was a French academic painter of rural landscapes, maritime seascapes, florals, and still lifes. Born in Bordeaux, France in 1860, his style is similar to that of the Barbizon school, which preferred realism over romanticism. Godchaux's work has often been found among the ledgers of art dealers in Bordeaux around the turn of the 20th century, presumably due to his affinity for playing the national lottery. The artist died in 1938.
