Theme: The Bible has a lot to say about how we handle the wealth and responsibilities that God has given us.

You might think, “I’m just a kid. I don’t have any responsibilities or wealth.” Think again. We all have different abilities, talents, advantages, resources, and skills. And God cares about what we do with them. Material things are not as important to God as what is eternal. But God does care about how we handle the resources, abilities, and opportunities that He blesses us with. In this series, we will explore four of Jesus’ teachings that talk about how we are to handle what we have been given.

ELEMENTARY LESSONS:

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:19-21

LESSON 1: THE TALENTS: USE IT OR LOSE IT

We should not waste what God has given us.

Synopsis: Jesus told a story about a wealthy boss who put his servants in charge of his money while he took a very long trip. He gave them each what he thought they could handle. He gave five talents to one, two talents to another, and one talent to the last. When we don’t use what we’ve been given to serve God and others, it’s like taking the gifts God has given us, and burying them in a hole.

Scripture: Matt 25:14-30, Romans 12:6-8

LESSON 2: THE RICH YOUNG FOOL: ALL BUCKS, NO BRAINS

We should not horde earthly wealth, but use it to help others.

Synopsis: Jesus told a story about a man whose land produced such a giant and valuable crop, that it made him extremely rich. He had more grain than his barns could handle. This parable shows us how selfish it is to hoard all of our blessings and resources for ourselves, and it displays the foolishness of placing your hope in worldly wealth, which can be gone in an instant.

Scripture: Luke 12:15-21, Matthew 6:19-20

LESSON 3: THE SHREWD MANAGER: YOU’RE FIRED… BUT ALSO… WELL PLAYED

Our friendships and relationships with others are more valuable than money.

SynopsisJesus told a story about a crooked accountant who knew that his boss was about to fire him. He came up with a sneaky, dishonest plan, figuring that if he helped and befriended his Boss’s debtors, then he could look to them for help after he lost his job. Even a sneaky, dishonest, crooked, cheat understands that friendships are more valuable than money.

Scripture: Luke 16:1-9

LESSON 4: THE WIDOW’S OFFERING: LESS IS MORE

It doesn’t matter what you have. It matters what you give.

Synopsis: Jesus sat down and watched people put their offerings in one of collection chests at the Temple. Each of the Temple’s thirteen offering chests had a metal, trumpet-shaped funnel at the top, where the coins would be placed, so that they would drop into the storage space below. And back then, there was no paper money – only coins. Jesus watched as many rich people were throwing in large amounts of money. They didn’t gently place the coins inside the funnels. They threw them, so that their offerings would make lots of noise and draw lots of attention. Then, Jesus watched as a poor widow gave two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Trusting that God would provide her next meal, she gave the last of her money away. Jesus recognized the poor widow’s sacrifice as the greatest, because she had the least to give.

Scripture: Mark 12:41-44
