Competing in the Winter Games requires strength, ability, and a little faith. Daniel displayed these qualities in great measure. In this series, kids will look at the life of Daniel through the lens of training for the Winter Games.
_______
“He sets people free and saves them. He does miraculous signs and wonders. He does them in the heavens and on the earth. He has saved Daniel from the power of the lions.” Daniel 6:27 (NIRV)
Lesson 1: Hockey
Scripture: Daniel 1:6-20, Daniel’s Training in Babylon
Hockey is a team sport that requires strength and agility. When Daniel and his friends were taken into captivity, they refused to eat the king’s food because it would make him “unclean.” By eating a better diet, Daniel and his “team” grew stronger and more agile than the rest of the men in the king’s service.
Objective: Kids will learn “I will take care of myself, so that I can serve God better.”
Lesson 2: Curling
Scripture: Daniel 2:25-49, Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream
In curling, the sweepers assist the curler in getting the rock toward the house. When the king was disturbed by his dream, none of his advisors could assist him. Daniel was brought in to tell the king what the dream was and what it meant. He used his God-given talents to serve the king and bring home the message that God is in control.
Objective: Kids will learn “I will use the talent God has given me to serve others.”
Lesson 3: Figure Skating
Scripture: Daniel 5:22-31, The Writing on the Wall
King Belshazzar and his banquet guest witnessed an unseen hand, writing figures on the wall. The king’s wise men tried to skate around the fact that they did not understand the writing. Only David knew what the figures meant. God’s message to the king was not a good one.
Objective: Kids will learn “I will not lean on my own understanding; I will trust in God.”
Lesson 4: Skeleton
Scripture: Daniel 6:15-27, The Lion’s Den
Skeleton is one of the most dangerous events at the Winter Olympics where athletes put their safety at risk. King Darius threw Daniel into the den of lions. The next morning, he was probably expecting to see only Daniel’s skeleton. But Daniel had put his safety in God’s hands, and God had seen him through.
Objective: Kids will learn “I will put my faith in God to see me through.”
