Word to the Wise! 

In this series, kids will study the book of wisdom – Proverbs. The proverbs are pithy little sayings, but they contain so much wisdom. God calls us to seek out His wisdom and to live as wise men and women, boys and girls.

Proverbs Children's Ministry Curriculum Lesson Overview

Memory Verse For Lessons 1-4:

“Wisdom is worth more than rubies. Nothing you want can compare with her.” Proverbs 8:11 (NIRV)

Lessons 1-4:

Lesson 1: The Value of Proverbs
Scripture: Proverbs 1:1-7
The introduction of Proverbs is an explanation of the benefits of studying the proverbs and gaining wisdom. Studying proverbs will make us smarter and more resourceful. It will also help our relationships with other people and with God. 
Objective: Kids will say “We should seek out God’s wisdom.”

Lesson 2: Passing Down Wisdom
Scripture: Proverbs 3:1-10, Trust in the Lord / (Proverbs 1:8-7:27)
The writer of Proverbs was seeking to pass down wisdom to his son. In the first seven chapters of Proverbs, we see how important it was for him that his son understand the benefits and importance of pursuing wisdom.
Objective: Kids will say “We can pass down God’s wisdom to others.”  

Lesson 3: Wisdom Calls
Scripture: Proverbs 8:11-21, Wisdom Calls Out / (Proverbs 8)
What if Wisdom were a person? She would call out to us, letting us know that she wants us to find her. When we do, she will reward us handsomely. This section of Proverbs continues to emphasize God’s desire that we seek wisdom, because wisdom is seeking us. 
Objective: Kids will say “God's wisdom is not hard to find.”

Lesson 4: Two Women
Scripture: Proverbs 9:1-18, Wisdom and Folly
We’ve already imagined Wisdom as a person. Foolishness can be seen the same way. These two women lead very different lives. We should be careful which one we follow after. 
Objective: Kids will say “We must choose God's wisdom or the World’s Foolishness.”

“If you want to become wise, you must begin by respecting the Lord. To know the Holy One is to gain understanding.” Proverbs 9:10 (NIRV)

Lessons 5-8:

Lesson 5: Solomon’s Proverbs About Money
Scripture: Proverbs 11:23-29, Money / (Proverbs 10:1-14:35)
This section of the book is jam packed with proverbs and words of wisdom on a variety of subjects and in many different categories. In Proverbs 11, we see Solomon’s wisdom about how we should relate to our money. 
Objective: Kids will say “It is wise to be generous with my money and stuff.”

Lesson 6: Solomon’s Proverbs About How to Treat Others
Scripture: Proverbs 15:1-9, A Gentle Answer / (Proverbs 15:1-18:24)
As we continue to look at the sayings of Solomon, we find even more treasure. Chapter 15 explains the importance of what we say to others and how we say it. 
Objective: Kids will say “It is wise to speak with gentleness, respect and love.”

Lesson 7: Solomon’s Proverbs About Doing What is Right
Scripture: Proverbs 21:2-5, Act Fairly / (Proverbs 19:1-22:16)
As we finish out this section on the sayings of Solomon, we are reminded of the importance of treating others with fairness and striving to do what is right. These things are pleasing to the Lord. 
Objective: Kids will say “It is wise to do what is right and fair.”

Lesson 8: Thirty Wise Sayings+
Scripture: Proverbs 23:17-25, Watch Who You Associate With / (Proverbs 22:17-24:34)
Solomon didn’t corner the market on wise sayings. In this section of Proverbs, we learn some of the sayings from other wise men. This includes the wisdom of associating with the right people and treating our parents well. 
Objective: Kids will say “To gain wisdom, associate with wise people.”  

Memory Verse For Lessons 9-12:

“If any of you needs wisdom, you should ask God for it. He will give it to you. God gives freely to everyone and doesn’t find fault.” James 1:5 (NIRV)

Lessons 9-12:

Lesson 9: Hezekiah’s Proverbs
Scripture: Proverbs 28:13-20, Honesty and Hard Work / (Proverbs 25:1-29:27)
King Hezekiah collected the wise sayings of Solomon. In chapter 28, we see the importance of being honest with others, obeying the Lord, and working hard for yourself. 
Objective: Kids will say “God's wisdom calls us to be honest, obedient and hard working.”

Lesson 10: Agur & King Lemuel’s Proverbs
Scripture: Proverbs 31:8-9, Speak Up / (Proverbs 30:1-31:9)
In this section, we are challenged to speak up for those who are poor, downtrodden, or otherwise are not able to speak up for themselves. God is pleased when we help the helpless. 
Objective: Kids will say “God's wisdom calls us to speak up for those who cannot speak up for themselves.”

Lesson 11: An Excellent Woman
Scripture: Proverbs 31:25-30, A Woman Who Honors the Lord / (Proverbs 31:10-31)
Many of the qualities described in Proverbs 31, are valuable for men and for women. We should seek to have these qualities within ourselves, and we should seek them out in other people. 
Objective: Kids will say “We should seek to be wise and we should seek out wise people.”

Lesson 12: The End of Wisdom?
Scripture: Proverbs 4:5-9, Get Wisdom!
In this final lesson, kids will be reminded of the importance of gaining wisdom. Kids will also be invited to share whatever wisdom they have gained over the course of the series and share their favorite verses from the book of Proverbs. The pursuit of wisdom never ends; it is a lifetime journey. 
Objective: Kids will say “Gaining God's wisdom is a journey that lasts a lifetime.”
