Details: Amazon.ca Putumayo began introducing mainstream America to the pleasures of world music in 1993. The label grew out of a women's clothing chain where employees were encouraged to vet tracks for in-store play. But the fledgling imprint, with its trademark children's book-like packaging and populist attitude, was soon able to stand on its own. Initially best known for genre compilations, of which they still put out several a year, the company has since launched a Putumayo Kids division and released several single-artist albums. Putumayo also produces a syndicated radio show and supports various charitable and not-for-profit activities. In one decade, the little-indie-that-could has racked up sales of more than 10 million units--a major achievement for any independent label. So, Putumayo is celebrating with a juicy 2-CD retrospective, complete with enhanced features and liner notes in four languages. Aside from being eminently collectible, it would make a thoughtful and welcome gift. --Christina Roden
