This volume has two goals. One is to explore the life and the thought of Fethullah Gülen and the important educational and peace-inducing activities in which he and those inspired by him have been engaged for several decades. The outcome of those efforts―of creating schools and providing diverse social and cultural services that bring people together people from diverse backgrounds―has been to provide the face of civic and civil Islam as an antidote to the uglier side of Political Islam. The second goal has been to make clear how the accusations against Mr. Gülen by the minions of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan could hardly be more false: that what Gülen and the Hizmet (Service) Movement that he has inspired are ultimately about is improving the world and saving it form its uglier inclinations. A brief discussion of his life and thought has been supplemented by the voices of more than 70 interviews conducted over several years, with individuals intimate and more distant but all inspired to be part of the process of serving humanity.

Bu ciltin iki amacı vardır. Birincisi, Fethullah Gülen'in yaşamını ve düşüncelerini, onun ve ondan ilham alanların son birkaç on yıldır yürüttüğü önemli eğitim ve barış yaratma faaliyetlerini keşfetmektir. Bu çabaların sonucu – çeşitli sosyal ve kültürel hizmetler sağlayarak farklı geçmişlere sahip insanları bir araya getiren okullar kurmak – sivil ve medeni İslam'ın, politik İslam'ın çirkin yüzüne bir antidot sağlama yönünde bir yüz oluşturmuştur. İkici amaç ise, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’ın taraftarları tarafından Gülen’e yöneltilen suçlamaların ne kadar asılsız olduğunu net bir şekilde ortaya koymaktır:

Ce volume a deux objectifs. Le premier est d'explorer la vie et la pensée de Fethullah Gülen ainsi que les importantes activités éducatives et de promotion de la paix dans lesquelles lui et ceux qui s'en inspirent se sont engagés depuis plusieurs décennies. Le résultat de ces efforts - la création d'écoles et la fourniture de divers services sociaux et culturels qui rassemblent des personnes de différents horizons - a été de donner le visage d'un islam civique et civil comme antidote au côté plus laid de l'islam politique. Le deuxième objectif est de clarifier à quel point les accusations portées contre M. Gülen par les partisans de Recep Tayyip Erdoğan sont peu fondées : ce que Gülen et le Mouvement Hizmet qu'il a inspiré cherchent finalement à accomplir, c'est d'améliorer le monde et de le préserver de ses inclinations les plus sombres. Une brève discussion de sa vie et de sa pensée a été enrichie par les voix de plus de 70 interviews réalisées au cours de plusieurs années, avec des individus intimes ou plus éloignés, mais tous inspirés à participer au processus de servir l'humanité.
