From a Basement on the Hill is Elliott Smith's sixth and final album, released posthumously in October 2004, nearly a year after his death. Recorded between 2000 and 2003, the album was delayed due to Smith’s personal struggles. Initially intended as a double album, it was unfinished at the time of his passing, with some tracks lacking vocals. Smith's family enlisted his former producer Rob Schnapf and ex-girlfriend Joanna Bolme to complete the album, selecting from over 30 recorded songs. The album addresses Smith's battles with addiction and depression. It became his highest-charting album in the US and was praised for expanding his sound with instrumental passages and heavier, guitar-based material. Smith's cause of death remains officially undetermined, with speculation about suicide or foul play.
