Amar Guriro, Pakistani environmental journalist

Amar Guriro is a Pakistani environmental journalist, editor, and media entrepreneur with more than 25 years of reporting experience, widely recognized for his in-depth coverage of climate change, environmental degradation, water security, natural disasters, biodiversity, and marginalized communities across Pakistan.

Based in Karachi, he is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Saga Digital AI, Pakistan’s first AI-powered digital media outlet, where he leads the integration of artificial intelligence into journalism while promoting innovative multimedia storytelling.

Throughout his career, Guriro has reported extensively from some of Pakistan’s most remote and climate-vulnerable regions, including the Indus Delta, Thar Desert, Balochistan, the country’s glacier-fed mountain regions, and coastal communities affected by rising sea levels.

His work combines investigative reporting with immersive field journalism, documenting the human impact of environmental crises, climate adaptation, migration, public health, and sustainable development.

Before launching Saga Digital AI, Guriro served for around seven years as Sindh correspondent with Independent Urdu, the Urdu-language edition of The Independent, UK.

Earlier in his career, he worked with Daily Times, Pakistan Today, Regional Times, and the Sindhi-language daily Kawish, steadily building a reputation as one of Pakistan’s leading environmental reporters. His journalism has also appeared in numerous international and national publications, including ABC News Australia, United Press International (UPI), Newsweek Pakistan, Dawn, Die Zeit, The Third Pole, Geo News, The Friday Times, and several other global media organizations.

As an environmental journalist, Guriro serves as President of the National Council of Environmental Journalists (NCEJ), a professional network connecting environmental reporters across Pakistan. He has participated in several prestigious international journalism programs, including the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), the Climate Change Media Partnership (CCMP), and multiple Earth Journalism Network initiatives focused on climate reporting and environmental communication.

His reporting has received international recognition for highlighting underreported issues such as climate-induced displacement, water scarcity, urban heat, environmental justice, and the lives of vulnerable communities. In 2019, the International Journalists’ Network (IJNet) named him its “Journalist of the Month” in recognition of his contributions to environmental journalism.

Beyond traditional reporting, Guriro has become one of Pakistan’s leading voices on the future of AI-powered journalism. Through Saga Digital AI, he is pioneering the use of artificial intelligence in Urdu-language news production, multimedia storytelling, and digital journalism, while continuing to produce field-based reporting that bridges technology with on-the-ground journalism.
